Gina was expecting to be late and have a long labour. She had just the opposite. Saturday afternoon Gina started having mild contractions. We both got very excited and thought we might be going to the hospital that night. However, Saturday came and went. While the contractions were still coming they never got stronger or more frequent that 10 minutes apart. This was the story for the next few days. We finally convinced ourselves it was just false labour and we likely wouldn't be going to the hospital till next week.
Tuesday night we went to Ice Sledge Hockey (Canada vs. Norway; Canada won 5-0) and during the game the contractions started to get a little stronger. When we got home they started to happen more frequently. Around 2:30 AM we decided we better finish packing so we could have a nap while we still could. However, Gina didn't get to sleep. Around 4am the contractions started getting really painful. We waited till about 6:30AM when the contractions were 2 minutes apart (at this point Gina thought she still had many many hours ahead of her and wasn't even sure she wanted to go to the hospital yet). We called the parents and told them we were headed to the hospital.
We got the hospital at 7AM, but there was "no room at the inn" so to speak. By 9AM we had a room and the doctor checked Gina and she was 5-6cm dilated (about half way). She was shocked. At first she was annoyed with the doctor because she thought he was messing with her, "You better not be kidding! There is no way I'm that far along." But he wasn't joking and for that Gina was VERY relieved. The doctor felt he had some time to run a few errands before he would be needed, but at 11:30AM while depositing a cheque at the bank he got the call from the nurse that Gina had began pushing and you could see the baby's hair. He grabbed the cheque from the teller and said "I'll have to do this later." Minutes later he was in the room.
Gina was a star! She did it all natural, no drugs at all. I'm so proud of her! She was so strong and focused. At 12:02PM, Anaya Mae Geoghegan came into this world (with a full head of hair of course). Gina I were over come with joy and tears. I was sobbing. I was so happy. We have a daughter! She's a healthy, tall, long-fingered beauty!
