Fight or Flight

This morning I fell asleep in the shower standing up. If you've never done it before you may be asking "How on earth did you do that? How is that even possible?" It's easy, I do it all the time. You prop your head against the shower wall, position your body so that you still get the majority of hot water running down your back, close your eyes and before you know it your multi-tasking (showering and catching up on some much needed rest).

As I'm enjoying the luxurious nap under the rhythmically falling water and falling deeper and deeper asleep, my wife gets out of bed to get a glass of water. She opens the bathroom door and sees me sleeping. It's definitely not the first time she's caught me sleeping in the shower, but usually I here her enter and quickly grab the soap and pretend I'm showering like a normal person. This time I keep sleeping. She turns on the water fills her glass and takes a drink expecting that I will here her and wake up soon. I don't.

She gets an idea. She fills her glass with cold water again and then walks over to shower. Probably a little annoyed that I'm getting this extra little sleep and wasting all the hot water, she flings the cold water over the glass wall...

In an instant my body is torn from its slumber. In one giant pump my heart fills my veins with adrenaline. My back and neck and legs lurch upright as my hands flail to block my attacker. Am I having a heart attack? a stroke? a seizure? My body was in complete fight or flight mode. Is someone attacking me? Confused, I yell "Ahhh!" loud enough to wake our two girls and probably the neighbors on either side. Then I see Gina with an empty glass in her hands, at first I think to call out to her for help, but I'm winded by the shock.

Meanwhile, this is more of a reaction that Gina had expected. She was a little startled by the whole thing...

As I start to catch my breath and begin to think straight, I see Gina laughing. Wait. She's not here to help; she's my attacker! I still can't say anything I'm still winded and I just gasp for words. It took a solid minute before I was able to calm down and it took the bus ride to work before my heart rate returned to normal.
